I sent money to the wrong bank account. Can I get it back?
Often, yes. Ask your bank to request the return first. If the recipient doesn't return it, the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) can help recover it without a lawsuit, and foreign residents of Korea can apply. What to do 1. Contact your bank (or the app you sent from) right away and ask it to request the return. Have the date and time, amount and recipient account ready. 2. If the money isn't returned, apply for KDIC's mistaken-transfer return support within one year of the transfer. Check which amounts are covered on the KDIC portal. 3. Apply online on KDIC's Financial Safety Portal (on a PC or in its app) or in person at KDIC. If applying is hard, call 1588-0037; KDIC staff can also visit to help. 4. KDIC asks the recipient to return the money and, if needed, uses a court payment order. You get back what's recovered minus the costs. Good to know • Voice phishing is handled differently. If you were tricked into sending money, call 112 and your bank right away. • Double-check the account holder's name on the confirmation screen before you send.
