Can I get my National Pension contributions back when I leave Korea?
Often yes. You can get a lump-sum refund (반환일시금) when you leave Korea if your country has a refund agreement or reciprocity with Korea, or if you paid in on certain work visas such as E-9 or H-2. What to do 1. Check whether your nationality or visa qualifies on the National Pension Service (NPS) page below. The country list changes, so look at the current one. 2. Apply at any NPS branch close to your departure date (the NPS page says how early), with your passport, ARC, proof of your bank account and your flight ticket. The money is paid once your departure is confirmed. 3. Leaving from Incheon? You can ask for airport payment when you apply; the NPS page lists the conditions. 4. Already left? You can still apply from abroad by mail or through an agent. Good to know • Don't wait: the right to the lump sum generally lapses five years after you become entitled. If more time has passed, ask NPS. • If you can't get a refund, you may still receive a Korean pension later if you meet the same conditions as Korean nationals.
